Sent a video in HD but it's still blurry on WhatsApp?
HD on WhatsApp still re-compresses your video. A 4K, 60 frames-a-second iPhone video sent with HD on is turned into a 720p file with a basic compression profile, keeping all 60 frames, so each frame gets very little detail.
What we measured
- In October 2026 we sent iPhone videos in a chat with HD on. They scored 20 to 28 out of 100 against the original.
- The same videos prepared with Postproof for chat scored 85 and 86, and WhatsApp delivered them untouched.
What helps for free
- Record in good light and hold the camera steady; grain and shake use up detail fast.
- Shorter clips keep a little more detail per second.
Questions
Is HD better than standard quality?
Yes, HD keeps more than standard. It just isn't the original.
Does the person receiving need HD on?
No. HD is about what you send. They see the copy WhatsApp stored.
