How to upload a high-quality video to WhatsApp Status
Give WhatsApp a clean 720p, 30 frames-a-second video and post it straight to Status: WhatsApp then keeps it at 720 and about 3 Mbps. A big camera video posted straight is shrunk much harder. Postproof prepares that clean 720p version for you.
Without an app
- Turn on HD uploads once: in WhatsApp, go to Settings, Storage and Data, Media Upload Quality, and choose HD Quality.
- Open your own chat in WhatsApp (search for your name or number), attach the video and send it. If an HD button shows, leave it on.
- Hold the message you just sent, tap Forward, and choose My Status.
Why big camera videos lose so much
- In our tests in October 2026, iPhone videos posted straight to Status scored 5 to 28 out of 100 against the original, because WhatsApp shrank them to 464 by 832 pixels and kept all 60 frames a second. The same videos prepared with Postproof scored 73 to 91, and WhatsApp left them untouched.
What Status can show
- Status is small for everyone: about 576 by 1024 pixels at a low bitrate. A video can be the best version of that, but it won't look like your camera's 4K.
- Shorter clips get a little more detail per second than long ones.
Questions
Why does my Status look worse than my chats?
Status uses a lower limit than chats, so it squeezes harder.
Does Instagram do the same?
Instagram Stories also show videos at around 576 by 1024, so the same limits apply there.
