Why is my WhatsApp Status video blurry?
WhatsApp re-encodes every video you post to Status into a much smaller file. Detail, dark gradients and fast motion are the first things it throws away, so the video looks blurry, blocky or grainy, even if it was sharp on your phone.
What causes it
- Status compression is stronger than chat compression. A video posted straight to Status gets squeezed harder than one sent in a chat with HD on.
- Big source files suffer most. 4K, 60 fps and HDR video from an iPhone is far more than WhatsApp keeps, so it discards most of it.
- Grain, low light, sparkle and fast movement use up the little data WhatsApp allows, and they turn to mush first.
- It isn't your internet. A slow connection makes the upload slower, not blurrier.
How to keep it sharp, for free
- Turn on HD uploads once: in WhatsApp, go to Settings, Storage and Data, Media Upload Quality, and choose HD Quality.
- Open your own chat in WhatsApp (search for your name or number), attach the video and check HD is on before sending.
- Hold the message you just sent, tap Forward, and choose My Status.
Make it sharper still
- Prepare the video before WhatsApp touches it. In our tests, iPhone 4K footage prepared with Postproof came out about 30% sharper on Status than the same clip posted straight, measured frame by frame.
- Postproof does this on your iPhone in a few seconds. Nothing is uploaded.
Questions
Why does my Status look fine to me but blurry to others?
You may be seeing your own original. Other people see the compressed copy WhatsApp stored.
Does WhatsApp Business compress more?
In our tests through WhatsApp Business, videos lost noticeably more detail than people expected, so we tuned Postproof on Business.
Can I send a video as a document to Status?
No. Sending as a document keeps quality in a chat, but Status only accepts photos and videos, which are compressed.
Postproof prepares your video on your iPhone so it comes through crisp. Free to try.
